"Let me give this back to you."

March 10, 2024

My friend was telling me that her car got hit by another car in a parking lot. The person who hit her got out and came over to her profusely apologizing for the accident. As they started exchanging contact information, he requested to pay for it outright instead of going through insurance. While my friend a little uncertain she agreed. He kept apologizing and showing remorse. By the time my friend came home there was another text waiting for her from the driver again saying that he hoped this would be not too much inconvenience for her. Before she even could get an estimate he already contacted her again and wanted to give her $200, all that he had a the time. She accepted the money. The car got fixed for a reasonable price and she relayed the info to the driver who made arrangements to pay the money. He requested a different time than she had originally planned for because he had to be at this job during that time. They met and the driver gave her the extra money, apologizing that he could not come at the agreed time. This young person stated that he was still in high school, had his own lawn business after school and then worked in the evenings at a restaurant.

My friend's heart melted by hearing his hard work and his attitude throughout the whole event. She decided to give him all the money back and thanked him for his kindness towards her. He in turn cried and hugged her, so thankful for the gift. At the end my friend asked him where he was from and he stated, "Palestine."

When I heard this story I was so impressed, the kindness of my friend for not throwing a temper when the accident happened. The respect and honor that was shown to her by the other driver's concern for her. The way the young man handled the situation, taking responsibility, making things right. The story of this hardworking young man. And the final interaction of two immigrants working together for a common solution.

I heard bits and pieces of the story as they were unfolding, but when I heard the ending I cried. My heart broke over the kindness both of them showed each other, and the bond that was created between two strangers and a few seconds of mishap.

When I hear these things, my heart finds hope, hope for the next generation to be kinder, hope for the attitude of a hard working young man, hope because of kindness that was shown.

Let's look for these stories, look for the people who are making a difference, the people who contribute to a better world. Let's become those people.
