Living Out Our Faith

"How should we then live"
If you are older, you might remember this title of a book by Francis Schaefer around the Christian worldview and the lack of living out what the Bible actually has to say. I often wonder if my life reflects
what I believe, if I respond in a way that would honor God, if I think about the bigger picture of this
world and what is to come. I am a Christ follower and one of my favorite Scriptures from the Bible is
Micah 6:8 where God calls us to 'live justly, show mercy, and walk humbly with God', every day I try to live by that, but, as you know, I fail miserably. This morning in my Bible reading I was reading Proverbs 31 " Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak
up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
How should we then live? What does that look like for me? I want to empower under-resourced
neighborhoods to thrive, I want to help people who are lost in the system. I want to give hope where people feel hopeless. But I am not doing this alone. There are hundreds, thousands in Merced who live this out. I have friends who are passionate about the unhoused, to bring resources and housing to them.
Others who start tutoring programs to help kids succeed. There are people who care about kids in foster
care, and people who help our seniors. There are others who work with people's whose stories got them caught up in crime, and yet others, who have cared for the sick. Some of my friends help those whose bodies or minds don't function the way they were designed too. There are others who help with
education and job placements. There are employers who go the extra mile. There are people passionate
to help folks on the margins of society. Every sector of our society has people who speak up for those who cannot speak and defend the rights of the poor and needy. Each one of you, to an extent, living out
Proverbs 31!
Merced is filled with people who ask themselves the question "how should we then live?" And they are making a difference. I am so thankful to surrounded by people who care. I am so impressed by the work that is being done that often goes unnoticed.
I often hear that people don't care, but on any given day there are thousands of Mercedians doing good
work! THANK YOU!
Today, I will ask myself: how should I then live?
