Leaders in the Making

April 6, 2026

Last week, we celebrated the graduation of the Parent Leadership Training Institute, a 22-week program that helps parents and caregivers understand how our school system works and how to advocate well for their children. They learned how local government functions and how to become active, engaged
citizens in their communities. Between Los Banos and Merced, there were close to 50 families
represented, each with their own story, their own dreams, and their own vision for the future. It was
beautiful.
Not only did the adults gain valuable knowledge and resources, but there was also a youth track where
children learned important skills of their own. Each participant received one of my favorite books, The 7
Habits of Highly Effective People and had the opportunity to share about their experiences and the community projects they care deeply about.
Each project reflected something meaningful to them: a school garden, a quiet reading area, a chicken
coop to learn how to feed yourself, a safer crosswalk for children, a support and advocacy group for children with autism, and so much more. These families did not just learn new information, they are
already making a difference in their own communities. That is a beautiful thing.
Twenty-two weeks is a long commitment, and I am so proud of the families who completed the program. They are becoming the next generation of leaders in our communities. The young people who took part in this experience may one day become a mayor, a superintendent, a teacher, or a student who discovers a cure for cancer. The possibilities are endless.
I love it when people become advocates. I love it when people learn to stand up for themselves and for their neighbors. I love when people work together to make Merced a better place. Thank you to the leadership of the school district for making this possible.
