Living With Integrity

July 28, 2025

What is your moral compass?
I recently met up with a friend who needed to work through a moral dilemma. She wanted to volunteer with an organization, but could not sign their code of conduct. I was so proud of her to not just sign something without standing behind it. I wish more people would have that strength and wisdom. We live in a world where people go into contracts they never intend to fulfill, go into marriages where their
vows are broken within a year, and join organizations only to drop out in no time. We need more people with a strong moral compass!
Our young people are looking to the older generation (yes, that would be you and me) and trying to
determine how 'real' we are. How much we stand by our words, how much we really live out of our
convictions.
Our news is full of good people who have moral failures, make poor decisions, take shortcuts. We are all
prone to take the easy route. The question becomes, what happens after the failure? Do we admit to it, take responsibility, and make amends, or do we just continue to slide down the slippery slope?
What is your moral compass? What guides you? What makes you stay true to your word? What makes
you not take shortcuts? What makes you be honest? We need to learn from each other, hold each other accountable and process through the dilemmas of our lives.
I am proud of my friend who chose not to sign the code of conduct, and with that, having to live with the
consequence of not being able to volunteer with the group. However, she made a statement that allows her to live with integrity and abide by her moral compass. By the way, the organization she was going to volunteer with is amazing and does great work, it was just not the right fit for her.
